Samish Island and Bow
Living in Samish Island
Samish Island is a small (3.56 miles x 1 mile) and unique residential island community on Padilla Bay at the estuary of the Samish River and is considered one of the inner San Juan Islands. Although once an island, the Corp of Engineers constructed a land bridge turning the island into a peninsula. Located in the Bow-Edison area, Samish Island provides a peaceful alternative to today's chaos while being conveniently located between Anacortes and Bellingham. The island is five miles from Bow-Edison and connected to the mainland via a causeway.
Samish Island is part of the ancestral homelands of the Samish Tribe, a Coast Salish group of the Pacific Northwest. Today, Samish Island is primarily a residential area, with waterfront Bed & Breakfasts, and great views of both Samish and Padilla Bays. As you travel the back roads of Samish Island you will enjoy the views as well as the opportunity to visit farms selling local artisan cheeses, apples, berries, and farm-fresh produce. Don't miss out on the locally caught oysters, crab, and other shellfish.
The homes on Samish Island range from rustic cabins to grand estates. There are about 480 homes on the island, both permanent residences, and vacation homes.
Samish Island Community
The residents of Samish Island are a mix of working people, retired people, young families, artists, small business owners, fishermen, small and large landowners, and summer residents and visitors.
If you are into birdwatching, the Samish Flats is an excellent location for finding birds associated with both land and saltwater, particularly in winter. Samish Island is home to water birds, songbirds, hawks, eagles, owls, and falcons. The resident blue heron colony and the year-round eagle and hawk population are a joy for birdwatchers.
Samish Island has a fire department, community center, water association, tennis courts, parks, and a community garden.
Samish Island Local business
There are numerous small businesses on the island including art camps, caregivers, churches, house cleaning, computer services, garden services, home improvement, and lodging. Probably the most well-known are:
Breadfarm Bakery– A highly popular artisan bakery focusing on naturally leavened bread and rustic pastries. All items are handcrafted, with no additives or preservatives.
Samish Bay Cheese– Award-winning cheese producers offering a large selection of specialty cheeses produced locally using products from their dairy. Not only do they have a retail store, but you will see them at the local farmer's markets.
Chuckanut Manor Restaurant, Longhorn Saloon, Mariposa Taqueria, the Oyster Bar on Chuckanut Drive, The Edison Cafe, and the Rhododendron Cafe are a few more of our favorites!
