Oak Harbor is a city located on Whidbey Island in Island County.

Oak Harbor is best known for Naval Air Station Whidbey Island (NASWI).  The main portion of the base, Ault Field, is about three miles north of Oak Harbor.  It was originally established to protect Puget Sound during WWII. There are 17 active-duty squadrons and 3 ready reserve squadrons based at NAS Whidbey Island. The air station also maintains a search and rescue unit that flies three Sikorsky MH-60S Nighthawks. Navy search and rescue provides 24-hour day and night maritime, inland, and mountainous rescue support for Department of Defense personnel and the greater Pacific Northwest community.

Things to do in Oak Harbor, WA 

Stop and walk across the Deception Pass Bridge on your way to Oak Harbor.  It is unforgettable. Read up on the history of it before you visit and you will really be blown away by the hard work put into building this structure allowing people to access Whidbey Island by way of the car. 

Visit any of the State Parks on Whidbey Island.  These include:

Fort Casey, Joseph Whidbey State Park, and Fort Ebey State Park.

Get acquainted with the Naval Air Station and the museum they offer.  NAS Whidbey houses and employs a great majority of the Oak Harbor residents.

Do a little shopping in the Historic Downtown part of Oak Harbor.  There are many little shops along Pioneer Way.

Getting to Oak Harbor

Whidbey Island is accessible by the Deception Pass Bridge, a National Historic Monument since 1982, which are actually two spans that link Whidbey Island to Fidalgo Island over Canoe Pass and Deception Pass. It links three islands together and interweaves history, recreation, commerce, nature, and more.  The bridge, one of the scenic wonders and destinations of the Pacific Northwest, is only a 20-minute drive to NAS Whidbey from Fidalgo Island over this spectacular bridge. From I-5 take State Rte 20 W to Whidbey Island.
